Guide · South Island
The South Island, ten days done properly.
Most South Island itineraries try to do everything and end up doing nothing well. This is the route we actually book for clients: one loop, sensible driving days, and time where time matters. Ten days works, fourteen is better.
Days 1 - 2
Christchurch to Lake Tekapo
Land, collect the car, and resist the urge to rush. Take the inland route through Geraldine rather than the highway and you arrive at Tekapo in time for the lake at its most absurd shade of blue. The Church of the Good Shepherd is worth ten minutes; the dark-sky reserve overhead is worth the whole evening. Book an observatory session before you leave home.
Days 3 - 4
Aoraki / Mt Cook
An hour from Tekapo along the edge of Lake Pukaki, the road into Mt Cook village is one of the great drives, and one people photograph more than the mountain itself. Walk the Hooker Valley track early, before the day-trippers arrive. One night is enough for the highlights; two lets you wait out weather, which matters here.
Days 5 - 6
Wānaka
Through the Lindis Pass and into Central Otago, Wānaka is the natural pause in the middle of the trip. Slower than Queenstown, better food than it needs to have, and the best single morning walk on the island at Isthmus Peak. Two nights minimum; three if the forecast is kind. Our Wānaka guide covers the trails and the lodges in detail.
Days 7 - 9
Queenstown
Over the Crown Range (take the Cardrona road, not the highway) and down into Queenstown for three nights. One day for the town and the lake, one for the adventure you came for, one kept deliberately loose for weather. Arrowtown deserves an afternoon; Gibbston's cellar doors deserve a driver. The Queenstown guide goes deeper on where to stay and what to book ahead.
Day 10
Milford Sound
The day everyone builds the trip around, and the day most people get wrong. Coach-cruise-coach, fly-cruise-fly, or drive yourself; each has real trade-offs, and we have written them all up in our Milford day trip guide. Whichever you choose, pick a smaller boat. The cruises guide explains why boutique beats big on this fiord.
Days 11 - 14
The optional extension
With four more days, loop west from Queenstown over the Haast Pass to the glaciers and the West Coast, then return to Christchurch via Arthur's Pass or the TranzAlpine train out of Greymouth. It adds driving, but the coast is a different island entirely; wilder, emptier, and genuinely weather-dependent. We only recommend it outside the winter months.
Practical notes
What to book ahead
In season (December to March), book the Tekapo observatory session, the Milford cruise, and any lodge with fewer than twenty rooms before you book your flights. Cars with automatic transmission sell out; one-way hires to Queenstown carry a fee, but save you the return drive. If any of that sounds like work, it is exactly the work we do.
