Christchurch - the gateway, done properly.

Nearly every South Island journey starts and finishes here, and most visitors spend less than an hour in the city on the way through. Give it two days instead and Christchurch repays you: a walkable, still-rebuilding centre, a river you can punt, a market worth lunch, and the shortest run to the Alps anywhere on the island.

01

When to go

Canterbury's dry east-coast air gives Christchurch more clear days than the west of the island, so the shoulder seasons are kinder than people expect. Summer (December-February) is long light, gardens at full tilt, and the punts and trams running late; it is also when cars and small hotels sell out first. Autumn is the advisor's pick - the Botanic Gardens turn gold, the crowds thin, and a good table is a phone call rather than a campaign. Winter suits skiers, with Mt Hutt ninety minutes away and the city quiet. Spring is windiest and prettiest by turns.

02

Arriving and leaving

The airport is twenty minutes from the centre, and the difference between a calm first hour and a frayed one is almost always the car. We pre-arrange a chauffeur through BlackStone Chauffeur, who cover Christchurch alongside Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown: flight tracked, driver at arrivals, luggage matched to the vehicle, fixed price confirmed before you leave home. The full picture is on our airport transfers page.

Driving yourself? Both Ezi Car Rental and GO Rentals have Christchurch branches, and Wayfarer clients get preferred rates with both. Automatics and one-way hires to Queenstown go first in summer - settle the car before the flights.

03

Where to stay

We don't yet have a direct relationship with a Christchurch property, which changes how we book the city rather than what you get. We work the same supplier channels we use everywhere else, request the better room on your behalf, and tell you honestly which addresses are worth the money. The shortlist we actually use:

For a small five-star in the rebuilt centre, The George is the one we reach for when a client wants the city on the doorstep and a proper concierge behind it. For character, the restored villa at The Classic Villa sits minutes from the Botanic Gardens, and Hotel Montreal has the largest rooms in the centre - useful on a longer stay with luggage. For a couple who want quiet and a short walk to dinner, we like Elysian du Regent.

Prefer not to be in town at all? Waipara's vineyard stays are forty minutes north and Banks Peninsula an hour and a half south - say the word and we build one in. For the places where we do have an owner on speed dial, see all partner properties.

04

The centre, on foot

Start at the Botanic Gardens and punt the Avon from the Antigua Boatsheds; the willow-lined reach through Hagley Park is the city's signature hour, and the last session of a summer day has the best light. If the legs are done, the heritage tram runs a fifty minute hop-on hop-off loop past the gardens, the Bridge of Remembrance and New Regent Street. Eat at Riverside Market, open seven days a week on the river, where cured meats, seafood, breads and coffee sit under one roof - then walk the short stretch to Cambridge Terrace and The Terrace for street dining along the water. New Regent Street's pastel facades are the postcard; the Arts Centre's stone quadrangle is the better half hour. Cathedral Square, Shigeru Ban's Cardboard Cathedral, and the memorial walls are the parts of this city that stay with you.

05

The upgrade angle

Christchurch is where we spend the small money. A chauffeur from the terminal instead of a shuttle. A garden-facing room rather than the standard one. A private tasting for two at Waipara cellar doors that don't open to coach groups, an hour north and back in time for dinner. Akaroa - the French settlement on Banks Peninsula - by small boat rather than coach. And if the trip is long enough, the run to Lake Tekapo for the Church of the Good Shepherd and the dark sky above it. None of it costs a great deal; all of it changes the day.

What to book ahead

In December to February, book the car, the Milford cruise and any property with fewer than twenty rooms before you book flights. The centre is still rebuilding block by block, so check where a hotel's entrance actually sits before you pack light. And if the forecast turns, text us - Canterbury weather rearranges plans more reliably than any airline does. Our South Island itinerary shows how we like the first two days to run.
